Civils Site Engineer – North East

We are looking to recruit an experienced Site Engineer to join a busy Civils Department, supporting the successful delivery of civil engineering projects.

The role will involve responsibility for setting out, quality control, technical coordination, subcontractor management and site documentation, working closely with Site Supervisors, Construction Managers, Works Managers and the wider project team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurate and consistent setting out of all works.
  • Ensure works are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications and project requirements.
  • Complete and maintain quality procedures and check sheets for works including concrete, drainage, paving and tarmac.
  • Agree weekly measures with labour-only subcontractors.
  • Manage subcontractors on site to ensure works are delivered effectively and unnecessary additional costs are avoided.
  • Order required materials including kerbs, drainage products, channels and reinforcing steel.
  • Provide appropriate delivery dates and procurement lead times to support cost-effective purchasing.
  • Liaise with Site Supervisors and Construction/Works Managers regarding labour and plant requirements against the master programme.
  • Work alongside the Site Foreman to collate dayworks and site instructions, ensuring additional works are recorded and agreed.
  • Ensure the latest drawings are available on site and correctly controlled, including maintaining the drawing register and removing superseded drawings.
  • Assist with the preparation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Manage technical queries and maintain the appropriate query log.
  • Assist with progress reports for client meetings alongside the Works/Construction Manager.
  • Ensure site files and required legal documentation are established and maintained correctly.
  • Manage the concrete testing process and associated records.
  • Compile Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals.
  • Assist with monthly valuations and maintain appropriate supporting records.
  • Liaise with the Design Team to ensure required information is available ahead of construction activities.
  • Raise design clarifications and identify opportunities for practical or cost-saving solutions.
  • Identify and suggest improvements to site and operational processes.
  • Update the Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan as required.
  • Ensure completed works are inspected, agreed and signed off by the client.
  • Support and coach existing team members with their ongoing development and career goals.

Experience & Skills

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as a Site Engineer within civil engineering or construction.
  • Strong setting-out experience.
  • Good understanding of construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience working across areas such as drainage, concrete, paving, highways/tarmac and groundworks.
  • Knowledge of site quality assurance and inspection processes.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, labour, plant and materials.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements on construction sites.
  • Ability to manage technical queries and liaise effectively with design teams.
  • Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Commercial awareness, including experience supporting measures, valuations and additional works.
  • Strong communication skills when dealing with clients, subcontractors and internal project teams.
  • A proactive approach to identifying technical, programme and cost-saving solutions.
